Global warming is one of the most tumultuous topics in today's society. Some believe it is happening as we speak, while others question its very existence. So, is it real or just a hoax? There is no single answer, but the evidence overwhelmingly supports the first. Surely we have all heard this word at one time or another, but few individuals know its true definition. Rightly so, however, global warming is not explained so simply. Simply put, this is the dramatic increase in Earth's average air and ocean temperatures since the 20th century. This increase is mainly attributed to two main culprits: the greenhouse effect and human activity, such as the use of fossil fuels. In both cases, the enemy is carbon dioxide (CO2). The greenhouse effect is the process by which atmospheric gases, such as CO2, trap the Sun's infrared energy and prevent it from radiating into space.
