BODYHofstede's Value Dimensions (Hofstede)To better understand Chinese culture in both business and everyday social life, it is helpful to examine Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions in China. Hofstede dimensions include; power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, pragmatism and goal orientation. To start, China has a very large power distance with a score of eighty. Unlike America, people who hold power, such as bosses or very wealthy people, will not interact with those who are considered to be at the lower end of society. This also applies to men and their hierarchy compared to women, which has only recently started to become more balanced. In the individualism category, China received a low score of twenty. This makes China a group-oriented culture and means that most of their decisions will be based on what would benefit their inner circle the most. In America, we consider hiring close friends or family a “conflict of interest.” However, this belief is completely opposite in China and seems to be the social norm. China is considered a masculine society, with a score of sixty-six. Being a male society means being oriented and driven by success, making everything a competition. Chinese family members are known to choose work over family to succeed. They will work long hours and travel long distances from home if the pay is better in a different location. Children also compete every year to get the best grades in exams, and the grading system in their schools is much more important than in America. When it comes to adaptability, the Chinese are considered masters. With a score of thirty on the Uncertainty Avoidance scale,… in the center of the paper… a good deal that benefits them the most. Again, body language is important and you should never show any sign of anger or frustrationWorks Cited• China Highlights.[Online][Cited: April 21, 2014.]http://www.chinahighlights.com/travelguide/ transportation/.• China Travel Discovery.[Online][Cited: April 21, 2014.]http://www.chinatraveldiscovery.com/china-life/.• Kwintessential.[Online][Cited: April 21, 2014.]http: //www.kwintessential .co.uk/etiquette/doing-business-china.html.• Canadian Trade Commissioner Service.[Online][Cited: 21 April 2014.]http://www.tradecommissioner.gc. ca/eng/document.jsp ?did=107932.• The Chinese language.[Online][Cited: April 21, 2014.]chinalingual.com.• The Hofstede Center.[Online][Cited: April 2014, 2014.]http: //geert-hofstede.com /china.html.• China Travel Guide.[Online][Cited: April 21, 2014.]http://www.travelchinaguide.com/intro/religion/.
