Religious RevivalsCharles G. Finney, born in 1792 in the state of Connecticut, had a lasting impact on the new, young America. Finney attended law school and was a practicing attorney when he had a life-changing conversion. He found himself dissatisfied with his life, repented of his sins, and steered his life in a different direction to follow God. While Finney left his law practice to become a preacher and evangelist, his sermons are filled with reasonable arguments and examples drawn from the courtrooms with which he was familiar. “Sinners are forced to change their hearts” is not just a sermon but a very logical argument for a case that Finney fully believed. One of Finney's famous sermons written in 1831 was titled "Sinners Are Obliged to Change Their Hearts." In this sermon he breaks with the widely accepted Calvinist way of thinking and explains man's ability to choose to turn away from sin and turn toward God.
