Although both authors used different literary elements, they both creatively used symbolism to not only express their inspirations, but also to capture the reader's attention. Symbolism is defined as “the use of symbols to indicate ideas and qualities by giving them symbolic meanings other than their literal sense (“Symbolism – Examples and Definition of Symbolism)”. The tone found in Raisin in the Sun (Hansberry 1507) is both ironic and dark. Hansberry uses symbolism several times throughout his work. The first sign of symbolism was that Mrs. Younger's plant was not only a symbol of her dreams of realizing her dream house with a yard for gardening and providing a better life for her children, but also for caring for her children . Another example of symbolism used was Beneatha's natural hair which symbolized her pride in her African heritage and her desire to discover her African heritage. The final example of symbolism identified was the insurance payout the family received due to Mr. Walter's death. Mr. Walter made sacrifices to ensure that, in the event that he lost his life, his family would be well aware of the racial prejudice that prevented him from obtaining a home and rewarding work his entire life. His sacrifice symbolizes the efforts that generations of African Americans have made to give their children's dreams a chance to succeed ("A Raisin in the Sun Symbols)."). In “Battle Royale,” Ellis used different symbolism to illustrate the racism that black people endured during that time. It demonstrated the struggle that black people had to go through to gain equal rights. These symbols included but were not limited to the stripper, the flag tattoo on the stripper's stomach, the blindfold, and the battle itself. The stripper can be symbolic for the connection between
