Over the last two decades, a new branch of technology called Biotechnology has been developed. The basic concept is to modify a plant to improve it in some way, be it growth rate, size, flavor, etc. This process creates genetically modified foods or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In the case of wheat, this can be done by inserting a gene from a bacterium into it so that the crop becomes tolerant to insects and produces its own insecticide. Today, millions of people in the United States often eat and drink genetically modified food.
