On June 7, 1942, the United States Navy experienced one of its most decisive victories of World War II along with an influential moment in the future of naval aviation tactics. Before the Battle of Midway and throughout much of World War II, the attention of U.S. naval seapower was largely focused on U.S. battleships. Several engagements in World War II proved contrary to the theory of battleship power, introducing the idea of carrier and naval aviation tactics. This new set of tactics allowed for advanced, fast-paced naval influence on the enemy, a practice much seen during the Battle of Midway. Through the tactical use of dive bombers at the Battle of Midway, the U.S. Navy gained a significant military advantage both during the battle and toward the future of naval aviation. First, the context of the presence of aircraft carriers and dive bombers before and throughout Midway will be noted, along with the U.S. Navy's original naval tactics prior to Midway; subsequently the tactics of US aircraft carriers and dive bombers during the Battle of Midway will be described and analyzed; Finally, an analysis will be provided on how decisions and tactics during the Battle of Midway influenced the future of the U.S. naval naval power philosophy. Overall, this article will demonstrate the high degree of influence on the future of U.S. naval tactics that the use of aircraft carriers and dive bombers had during the Battle of Midway. Prior to the Battle of Midway, U.S. naval aircraft carriers had a complex history of development and testing. The first idea for an aircraft carrier can be seen on the Royal Navy's HMS Furious in 1909. Over the next 20 years, especially after the First World War, the aircraft carrier program experienced even more... middle of paper... ...and using dive bombers, the US fleet destroyed four Japanese aircraft carriers, overwhelmed the Japanese fleet, and changed the direction of the Pacific campaign. Although other platforms provided support for the dive bombers during Midway, the primary tactical advantage came from the forward force provided by the dive bombers. The successful implementation of dive bombing tactics has led to the desire for fast and accurate weapons systems by air units, which can be seen in modern fighter aircraft. Additionally, the desire for more aircraft carriers came from the success at Midway. As seen at Midway, overwhelming air power had a strong influence on US victory. Other aircraft carriers could provide these numbers. In conclusion, it is clear that the overwhelming force provided by the dive bombers at Midway led to U.S. victory and directly influenced the direction of U.S. Naval Aviation..
