In the novel The Hunger Games written by Suzanne Collins, Katniss, a young woman living in District 12 of Panem, in post-apocalyptic North America, struggles to put food on the table table for his family. A country where the Capitol oppresses its citizens by keeping them isolated from the outside world. The Capitol also forces one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district to fight in a blood sport that the Capitol considers entertainment known as The Hunger Games. During the reaping of the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss' sister Prim is chosen as the female contestant for the game, which in turn causes Katniss to volunteer to take Prim's place. This type of mistreatment by the Capitol is what causes Katniss Everdeen to change from someone who doesn't follow the rules set by the Capitol. For example, she leaves the boundaries of the district every day, even if there are dangerous animals where she hunts, this helps her provide food for her family. Katniss is able to gather and hunt for herself and her family because she remembers what her father taught her when she was young: "Within the woods they roam freely, and there are additional worries such as poisonous snakes, rabid animals, and no true path to follow them. But there is also food if you know how to find it” (Collins 5). This causes Katniss to keep herself closed and avoid contact with other people, besides her close friend Gale Il Poaching carries severe punishment if caught by the Peacekeepers, a security force led by the Capitol, so she doesn't brag about the things she has caught. She mentions that "most Peacekeepers turn a blind eye to the few of us who hunt because they are hungry for fresh meat like everyone else" (Collins 5). Boasting about the game she killed would not look good on the peacekeepers if they allowed this to continue. This shows that Katniss is an independent woman who doesn't trust people, why show to the people who you can provide for yourself will bring unwanted things. She trusts Rue for what she did for Katniss while she was stuck in a tree and hurt, she pointed out. the stalkers' nest above Katniss which she used to distract the other careers so she could escape. Rue also helped treat Katniss' tracker jacker bites by chewing some herbs and placing them on the wounds. Katniss says she trusts Rue “Because she's a survivor, and I trust her, and why not admit it? It reminds me of Prim” (201). Later during the games Katniss discovers that Peeta has abandoned his alliance with the other careers and has disappeared. She eventually ends up finding him tired and injured hiding behind some rocks. She cares for him and shows him some affection because she states that “Being one of District 12's star-crossed lovers is an absolute requirement if I want further help from sympathetic sponsors” (247). This is also the moment where she realizes that all Peeta did was protect Katniss from other careers, which ends up making Katniss really trust Peeta and feel a real emotional connection with him. This shows that even though Katniss showed affection towards Peeta, she truly felt she could trust him
