On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the United States Constitution guarantees the right to marry for same-sex couples. Many conservative groups do NOT agree with this decision. They are convinced that gay marriages should not be allowed but that civil unions should be granted to lesbians and homosexuals. On the other hand there is a large group that believes that neither gay marriage nor civil unions should be offered to gay and lesbian couples and that any legal union should be available only to heterosexual couples. The differing opinions expressed by society's attitude towards gay marriage continue to cause great controversy across the country and should be put to an end by allowing homosexuals to marry. The true meaning of marriage is sharing vows between two people to bind their feelings towards each other. forever more. Many believe that the sanction should be shared between a man and a woman and that if it were open to homosexuals it would detract from marriage. According to Flint Journal writer Robert Cummings, “gay marriage is a mockery of marriage between one man and one woman” (Cummings). Much of society believes that if gay people marry, the sanction of marriage will become corrupt and will no longer be as important as it currently is. If marriage is such an important sanction between a man and a woman that will be corrupted by gays, then why do men and women divorce every day as if marriage means nothing? Heterosexual people take advantage of the privilege of getting married, while gay couples have to suffer because they are not considered “normal.” Everyone is so fixated on the fact that if they allow homosexuals to marry they will increase the diverse beliefs of society and religious groups. Although this country prides itself on freedom, the people who live within it do not allow the country to be free by judging those who are "different." If we start as a nation to become more accustomed to different ways of life, the world will be a much safer and more peaceful place to live.
