In the book A Clockwork Orange, the stories Harrison Burgeron, The Lottery and the films Gattaca and The Truman Show by Anthony Burgess, Kurt Vonnegut, Shirly Jackson, Andrew Niccol and Peter Wier respectively. These pieces of literature (and cinematography) all have a society that controls and manipulates the individual or protagonist. Society does this because it wants total control over both the individual and society as a whole. A Clockwork Orange is a futuristic look at England. Where teenagers rule the streets and neglect the stable laws of society. The novel's main character, fifteen-year-old Alex, and his three droog (friends) Pete, Georgie, and Dim, engage in nightly acts of random violence and total destruction. Alex is eventually betrayed by his so-called brothers and is captured by the police for killing an innocent woman. He is taken to prison, where he eventually takes part in the "Ludovico Technique", where Alex is "reconditioned" into a model citizen, forced to watch films of things he had once loved, including; beating people, raping young women and taking part in random acts of violence. “After this treatment you can be reinstated into society as a respectable member.” (pg. 132) This shows that society manipulates and controls the main character because Alex is forced to take part in a program that he does not want to be separated from. Furthermore, society completely changes Alex's personality, making him more "acceptable" for society. Another example of society trying to manipulate Alex is when F. Alexander tries to make Alex commit suicide to cover up the experiment backfiring. This is an example of society manipulating Alex to not only be... the center of the card... because society is manipulating Truman's life and the events in it to make sure he doesn't want to leave. Even when Truman starts to realize that he is on TV or at least that something is happening he tries to escape, but every time he tries to escape it seems impossible to escape. This is an example of society controlling Truman for their own benefit because they don't care about Truman just keeping him on the island. They try to create things that stop them from doing things. An example of this was when he went to the travel agency and found a poster of a plane crashing and a list of things that could happen on vacation. This is also manipulating Truman into believing that traveling is bad when in reality it is the authority that doesn't want him to travel.
