The main idea of the article titled “Abolitionist Movement” is to mention the important events that happen between 1830 and 1870. The abolitionist movement is mainly about movements that occurred to help slavery and reveals how important people never gave up on freeing their people. Many of these historical events happen during the time of Harriet Jacobs. There were a couple of confusing words, for example; defender, denounced and egalitarianism. To advocate or support means to publicly support or recommend a cause. To report or denounce means to state publicly that something is wrong. Egalitarianism or egalitarianism is a political philosophy that favors equality. This article points out five historical events which, for example, some words mentioned are; disintegration, denounced, hostile and corrupt. The author chose to use these words because he wanted to demonstrate how harsh the situation was in the nineteenth century. There is one question I have about this article: why didn't the author have a conclusion? The author has an introduction about the abolitionist movement, but his last paragraph is about one of the historical events. The author mentions in the article that the abolitionist movement aimed at the emancipation of slaves and the end of racial discrimination and segregation. The emancipation of slaves began from 1830 to 1870 and after 1840 abolitionists expanded and this led to the Civil War. During the 1820s the Second Great Awakening had a religious revival that increased abolitionism as well as women's rights. Later, in 1830, a Boston newspaper called the Liberator was strongly supported by African Americans. Also in Boston, in December 1833, racially and gendered delegates met in Philadelphia to found the American Anti-Slavery Society. They claimed that slavery was a sin and that they wanted it. The Emancipation Proclamation was a proclamation to free the slaves and this proclamation reveals how African Americans wanted to declare their freedom to everyone in the world. In this article there were three words that were complicated to understand, which were; now decipherable and dissected. From now on it means that whatever is affirmed, will be affirmed from that moment on and forever. Decipherable means finding or creating the meaning of something. Secession means that someone or something is removed from membership in a union, alliance, political or religious organization. There were two examples of personification in this article. The first example of personification is: “he captured hearts and imaginations.” This simply means that the Emancipation Proclamation moved Americans deeply, emotionally. The second example of personification is “secure your freedom” and this means that the slaves just wanted to ensure that they had freedom through the Emancipation Proclamation. In this article the author uses many words such as seceded, promised, liberty, and liberty, to show that thanks to the Emancipation Proclamation, the slaves were now free and will be able to live in peace from now on. According to the article, “The
