“They only want to kill when they are alone. Of course, if you went in there you would probably separate one from the herd, and it would be dangerous (Hemingway).” This quote from Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises has helped light the way for many new authors. Hemingway developed a unique writing style that left mysteries for readers to solve for themselves. Hemingway is best known for his signature writing, The Iceberg Theory. Hemingway deserves to be in the literary canon because he is a master of diction, his stories are unique and original, and he developed a writing style that many authors still use today. Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois. . His mother was very repressive and protective while his father, a doctor, was very masculine, often taking him fishing and hunting and sometimes taking him along on professional calls. These early experiences introduced Ernest to an adventurous lifestyle. The influence of his father's masculinity eventually led to an obsession with proving his own. When Hemingway's father committed suicide, the boy was left emotionally frightened. He shows this in many of his books, “it usually involves desperate risk, and behind it lies the shadow of ruin, physical or mental (Warren 3).” When the United States entered World War I, Hemingway joined the Red Cross medical service. He served on the Italian front as a doctor. He performed an act of heroism during a mortar bombardment. Hemingway was seriously wounded in the knee by shrapnel, but managed to carry a wounded soldier to an aid station. He was later decorated for his bravery and joined the Italian army as a soldier. He also served in World War II in a division that captured Paris, his favorite city. The main characters in the first... center of the card... are said to do this. The main character is actually Nick because he tries to help Ole deal with his death, but when he refusesHemingway was extremely influential to many authors, he showed the world that stories didn't need to be detailed and concrete. He proved that, through simplicity and mystery, it is possible to tell a great story. He made sure his story had a solid baseline to help guide the reader, but left out the main idea to discover. He was able to do this because he was master with diction, being able to eliminate most of the actual story and still convey the main idea would require little to no ideas or suggestions that might cause the reader to stray from the central idea. Many authors have tried to do what Hemingway did, but their stories, instead of taking away some of the background, left holes in the story where they weren't sure what to write..
