People with mental illnesses are often vulnerable in today's corrupt society; most of them cannot think and support themselves when left alone. Some are ridiculed and bullied because of their mental inability to reason and not act like everyone else. Usually in today's society, it takes another person or group of people to coach and support this person to succeed in life. Today, people all over the world try to make these people accepted and feel the same level of awareness as a normal person. On the other hand, in John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, the mentally ill are treated differently. Since the setting of the book takes place during the Great Depression, most of the mentally ill individuals at the time were sent to horrible asylums or killed mainly because in that society people simply misjudged those mentally ill individuals and did not they considered real human beings. beings. George and Lennie, the main characters, share a lot with each other. Lennie, who is a mentally ill individual, depends on George to survive and overcome the misunderstood society. However, Gorge is the strongest person who takes care of Lennie. George did everything he could to care for Lennie, but kept his mental illness a secret; makes Lennie vulnerable to attacks. From the struggles of the mentally ill against the reckless society; Through the character of Lennie, John Steinbeck suggests that although people with mental illnesses strive to be normal individuals and often try to adapt to a society that does not support their needs, they ultimately fail. Although, individuals with mental illnesses are dependent on stronger individuals and need to follow specific instructions from those they trust to succeed; often... in the middle of the paper... yes, it died quickly and was completely wiped out. Fortunately, in today's society, people can assist others who suffer from mental illness. However, Lennie tries to fit in by becoming a hard worker and having the support of George who has his back. It however leads to a complete disaster after Lennie gets into trouble, forcing George to give him up, to avoid George getting fired more often. On the other hand, people today are educated enough to understand the individual's needs and advise them to seek help. Even so, some people today underestimate what people with mental illnesses are capable of. Many people today receive help from professionals who can improve their lifestyle. From Lennie's experience, people should realize that people with mental illnesses can be as intelligent, agile and responsible as any other person!
