There are a huge amount of online relationships these days. About 35% of all relationships now begin online, 22% of these relationships do not become physical relationships. This means that the couple chooses to keep their relationship alive by communicating via telephone, Internet and Skype. Many of these relationships are now called “catfish.” There is a TV show on MTV called "catfish". This is when one of the people in the relationship uses a fake profile to talk to people. The entire relationship is based on a lie. They avoid meeting in person and normally say they live very far away to avoid the possibility of meeting in person. Many young people choose to maintain and/or start relationships online because it might be easier to be themselves. You have a computer screen in front of you and you're able to be yourself more than in person when you're face to face and it can be a lot more intimidating. Once someone feels comfortable online and has developed many friendships and romantic relationships, the chance of them returning to real life and trying to socialize with people becomes less and less.
