Topic > Disadvantage of Bilingual Education - 1228

The United State of America, a land of hospitality, receives many immigrants from all over the world. When most immigrants land in this great country they are faced with a big problem which is the English language. That is why there is a program called "Bilingual Education" which involves the teaching of academic content in two languages, in a native and secondary language with varying amounts of each language used in accordance with the program, which should help them in the first phase to continue the study and secondly learn the second language they are dealing with. In most cases this program becomes a burden especially for children up to 12 years old. Based on the book we used for this course "How Children Develop", we learned Furthermore, calling an interpreter for the child every time does not help him to learn English faster. He or she will not make any effort because he or she knows that someone will come to help him or her. According to Aimee Chin's article “Impact of Bilingual Education on Student Achievement,” bilingual education isolates students with limited English from students who speak English fluently, which can have social and academic effects. Because some guidelines are in the native language, students in bilingual education receive fewer introductions to English at school than students who do everything in English. This could postpone and weaken the acquisition of English language skills, which could then affect the academic paths they may pursue later. (p. 1) Therefore, the bilingual education program does not allow the child to learn the new language well because he will be attached to his native language or a little dependent on it and this can affect his vocabulary and grammatical development. because this will bring a lot of confusion in his mind and the child will tend to mix the word of his native language with the new one. It is also difficult for a child who does not speak the new language to socialize with peers as his or her vocabulary and grammar are inadequate.
