Topic > The Role of the Family Health Nurse Practitioner - 1263

The Allegheny County Health Department is located in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and offers numerous health prevention/wellness programs such as vaccinations, STD testing, and women and children and children's program (WIC). The WIC program offers medical services, supplemental food stamps, education, and referrals to income-eligible, medically or nutritionally at-risk pregnant women, infants, and children up to age five (Allegheny County Health Department, 2016). This program also screens these children for up-to-date vaccinations and refers them when deemed appropriate. Up-to-date childhood vaccinations will benefit the community and help prevent a variety of illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths (Whitney, Zhou, Singleton, & Schuchat, 2013). An important role of the nurse is to provide education to prevent illness and disease and extend knowledge to those in the community about promoting health and well-being
