We live in a culturally diverse world, with a rich culture and heritage. Everyone comes from a different background, with unique history and life experiences. Today we have broken down many racial barriers that existed in the past and we have learned to be more accepting of each other's culture and lifestyle. Even though our society is growing and becoming more tolerant of each other, there are still many barriers that need to be broken down. Racism still exists today, it is something we cannot easily get rid of. Some people express racism to varying degrees. Around the world there are many cases of racial acts against another race. Whether it's murdering a person other than your race, or looking down on someone, because of the color of their skin, or even denying a person the opportunity to attend an event, racism is still alive. What is racism? According to the Anti-Defamation League, racism can be described as “the hatred of one person by another, or the belief that another person is less than human because of the color of their skin, language, customs, place of birth, or any factor that supposedly reveals the fundamental nature of the person” (2001). Racism can be found all over the world, even in our little country, Belize. According to a recent October 21, 2013 Reuters article, titled “Ukrainian racist murdered Muslim, planted bombs in mosque in Britain,” shows how clear it is that racism still exists. This article is about a man called Pavlo Lapshyn, who went to the UK to work and study. But within a few days, according to Reuters “he stabbed Mohammed Saleem, 82, to death as he walked home from a mosque” (C. Pitas, 2013).
