Speech and language delays can be problematic for preschoolers, school-aged children, and adolescents. These delays vary in severity and have many causes; physical and developmental. Communication plays a specific and important role for all people, especially preschool children who are rapidly developing speech and language skills. The consequences of these delays can be devastating for the affected children and can follow them into adulthood. These effects can include academic problems, social and emotional problems, and can even lead to mental illness. Children with speech and language delays need professional intervention as soon as possible. However, even with intervention, some children are still at risk of suffering the negative effects of speech and language delays. Speech is the actual act of communicating through the use of words and sounds (American Family Physician, 1999 page 3121). The importance of verbal communication is the development of positive relationships with family and peers (American Family Physician, 1999 page 3121). Language is the act of understanding what is said and the ability to express thoughts and feelings in return. Language is also understood and expressed through the use of visual aids such as images (American Family Physician, 2011 page 1183). The development of both speech and language is essential for healthy social and emotional skills. A delay in speech and language may become apparent to caregivers when a child does not reach normal age-appropriate milestones. Children may not speak or understand what is considered average for their age group. Speech delay refers to the fact that a child's speech rate develops at a slower rate than normal and...... middle of paper ......with the same challenges could prove quite effective. This will provide the tools needed for social development skills and to increase positive outcomes for positive, long-lasting peer relationships and friendships.
