The Pyramids of Giza: GizaThe Pyramids of Giza are some of the largest man-made structures in history. Still standing today, the Pyramids offer a glimpse into Egypt's rich and glorious past ("Egyptian Pyramids - Ancient History - HISTORY.com," n.d.). The pyramids were not built for architectural reasons, but for religious reasons. The ancient Egyptians believed in life after death. By housing the dead of those they worshipped, the pyramids were intended to protect the deceased and provide them with the necessities they would need in the afterlife. Pyramids are thought to have originated centuries ago in ancient Egypt and various parts of Asia ("Tomb" Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, 6th edition (2016). Our ancient ancestors buried their dead. The most recognizable to the world today would be The Great Sphinx. Carved from rock, the Great Sphinx is a representation of Ra-Harakhte, the sun god. The Sphinx is half lion and half man whose face bears the appearance of Chefren himself. The last pyramid at Giza, known as Menkaure, was reportedly built by Khafre's son, Menkaura. Thought to be the last great monument due to the placement of the valley temple at the mouth of the main wadi. It is the smallest of the pyramids located in Giza, standing 228 feet tall. The two lower levels were built using red granite, the rest limestone. The pyramid complex was not finished by Menkaura due to his unexpected death. Menkaura's heir, Shepseskaf, would later complete the pyramid complex using mud
