She was excited about the future of her baby and her husband. Desiree loves that she was able to give Armand a child, especially a boy. For a time, everything went smoothly for Desiree and her husband. But then the unexpected happened: after three months the baby's skin color starts to look darker. Armand went from being a happy and beloved husband to an evil man, neither he nor Desiree could understand what was happening. Armand was furious because he felt he no longer loved Desiree because of the unconscious damage she had done to his home and family name. By "unconscious injury" Armand refers to the lost memory that feels as if his wife has lost her ethnicity. Armand did not want anything to destroy what was known as a “slave owner”. Desiree asks Armand if he wants her and the baby to leave the house, Armand's response was "yes, leave". When Desiree heard those words, her whole world shattered because the only person she had ever loved was Armand, and Armand no longer loved her. Kate Chopin describes how race played an important role in people's lives in the mid 1800's. Racism plays an important role in this story because when it is discovered that the child was mixed everything changes, such as Desiree's happiness and Desiree's mood. Armand.
