In almost any commercial you watch today, you will notice that they rarely tell you anything about the product being sold. Neil Postman said: “The TV advert is not just about the character of the product being consumed. It concerns the character of the consumers of the products” (128). I find this very true. Commercials combine the use of sight, sound, color, movement, and often humor to convey an effective message. Within a short period of time, these advertisements can capture your attention and convince you to purchase their product. It doesn't matter if the product has value, as long as advertisers can make consumers believe it does. Harnessing emotions is one of the most effective ways to attract people because you can't refute emotions. Advertisements can actually manipulate and create false perceptions by using emotional appeal to further benefit the advertiser. TV commercials are a form of persuasive communication. You see tons of pictures of famous people, breathtaking landscapes, fun vacations, and happy families spending quality time together. But what is this telling the consumer about the product? It tells those who might purchase them about their fears, insecurities, anxieties and dreams. They do this by constantly reminding them that their life could be better if they bought this or that.
