Cold Sassy Tree by Olive Ann Burns Chapter 30 begins with Will and Miss. I love talking in the kitchen about why Queenie drinks from a jar instead of a regular cup. Will thinks so because she told him the first cup is always the best, so a big jar makes a big first cup. Miss Love points out to Will that Quennie is just saying that since black people aren't supposed to eat or drink from people, they work on all fours. They continue talking about the horse Will's grandfather gave her and how much she likes it. As the chapters progress, more drama starts to happen. Will went to see his aunt to tell her he was sorry for making up all the stories he told, and for her to yell at him, he wanted her to. When he got there, he grabbed him and brought him inside. He thought she was mad at him, but it turned out her husband had painted the mantel and hadn't removed anything. He left a beetle, a button, and he left a matchbox up there and just painted everything around. She was furious with him and wanted to take it off because she wanted him to remember what he had done. When they started talking about the stories Will made up, she laughed and said they were the best stories she had ever heard. He had an idea. She went into the other room and brought out a book for him. It was empty and she told him he was going to be a scribe. She told him to write down all the stories he thought of. He told her he didn't want to be a writer, he wanted to be a framer. He rejected what he said and made him accept it. Will began writing down everything that happened in his family and called it his diary. He looks back and is happy to have the diary because now he can look back and remember what happened to his family during the next two weeks of his childhood. His father was supposed to go to New York to pick up the package at the family store and would take Will's mother with him if she decided to go..
