I think it is amazing that we have made such advances in fetal medicine that surgeons are actually able to perform surgery on a fetus while it is in the uterus. Deformities such as cleft lip or cleft lip are being repaired in the womb before the baby is even born. The video specifically shows a 26-week fetus that has a hole in its diaphragm. This would cause him a problem after birth if left unrepaired because his intestines would grow into the lung cavity preventing him from being able to breathe air outside the uterus. Fortunately with medical advances, doctors were able to perform a procedure on the fetus where a balloon was placed between the diaphragm and the lungs to prevent any obstruction from developing. As soon as the baby is born the balloon will be removed and he will probably be able to continue breathing without any difficulty. Having access to this particular fetal procedure has increased the survival of newborns affected by this condition by 50%. This is just one of many advances in fetal medicine. We have also come a long way with premature and micro-premature babies. Babies born as early as 24 weeks have a greater than fifty percent chance of survival. This is why 24 weeks of pregnancy is often referred to as feasibility
