Working with others and improving your own learning and performance are extremely essential skills in social work. In this essay I will reflect on how much I have developed these two skills and what I need to do to improve them. Before I started my undergraduate degree at university, I already had the ability to work with others. As I worked with others who were on the same course as me in Year 6 and also did volunteer placements which required people to work together. Before starting university, my work with others was sometimes effective and sometimes not very effective depending on the context of the people I worked with, the topic or the area we needed to work on. In sixth grade I got along with everyone in my class and working with them wasn't difficult. For example, one time two other students and I had to give a PowerPoint presentation on smoking. We worked together to plan what information will be included in the PowerPoint and who will write about what, what other materials we will need such as flyers and who will receive them. So before creating the PowerPoint presentation we planned everything together. Once the PowerPoint was created we decided the number of slides that each of us will read and talk about. So here I worked with others effectively and our PowerPoint presentation was successful. However, there were times when I did not work effectively with others, especially during my volunteer placement. I volunteered at a nursery. I enjoyed working there with the children, but I didn't get along very well with the staff. The staff didn't interact with me much and most of them usually gave me orders, such as to get something. When it came to working with the staff, for example when preparing the snack for... half of the card, I balanced my time. For example, work for two hours and then spend an hour with friends. This would allow me to get my work done or achieve my goals and fulfill other requests. In conclusion, I believe I have developed both skills by working with others and by improving my own learning and performance. But I need to work on these skills to be able to use them more effectively; and I also recognize that I will not develop them in a short period of time. I will have to work on the strategies I mentioned during the assignment to improve these skills. It may take a long time to make progress in these skills, but what I need to remember and implement are the strategies I mentioned. Also in this process I will be able to find out whether these strategies work for me or not and if there are other strategies that can help me improve my skills.
