During adolescence, adolescents are busy forming their position in society and developing social connections with their peers. The transition from childhood to adolescence can place them in a distressing and unstable state such as social isolation and loneliness. Teens may begin to feel confused or unsure about themselves and how they fit into society. Adolescents may experiment with different roles, activities, and behaviors as they try to establish a sense of self. According to Erikson, this is an important process for forming a strong identity and developing a sense of direction in life. The parent-child relationship is a key in the adolescent development process. As a psychologist, I would educate parents on Erikson's psychosocial theory in order to cultivate and facilitate healthy development. Adolescents show a dramatic change in their behavior towards their parents when they transition from children to adolescents.
