Hospitality management is the study of the hospitality industry. “A related degree can be obtained from a university college dedicated to hospitality management studies or a business school with a relevant department” (Google). In most cases, when wondering about hospitality management, people generally think of hotels, but in reality the hospitality industry is huge. There are nearly 1 million food service businesses in the United States and nearly three hundred thousand hotels. With so many job opportunities such as casino/gaming supervisor, travel agent, event planner and even executive chef, the demand for graduates is easy to see. Michigan State University's School of Hospitality Business is ranked third in the world by Hospitality magazine and one of the best nationally. On the surface hospitality management may seem just about hotels, however it is much broader and offers a wide range of careers in an ever-growing industry. Dating back to 1871, Mr. James Wormley, an African American entrepreneur, owned and operated the Wormley Hotel which was located at 1500 H Street, NW, Washington DC. Mr. Wormely was one of the few hospitality and service business owners in the city. In 1924, Alonzo F. Herndon built and opened the three-story Herndon Building on Aubrun Ave at the corner of Butler Street, which later became the site of the James Hotel operated by Mary Walker-James and her husband. According to NABOOD (Nation Association of Black Owners, Operators, and Developers) there are approximately 4 black-owned and operated hotels in Washington DC as of 2013.
