Crime prevention is a combination of programs and procedures that aim to reduce the chances of crimes occurring and their potential harmful consequences on community members. Crime prevention enhances the lives of community members. In this essay I will identify the components of crime prevention and its relationship to the criminal justice system. I will provide examples and identify different programs and institutions through which crime prevention is provided. I will identify and describe crime prevention concepts. I will explain the definition of crime prevention and provide examples. The three components of crime prevention are inclination, resources, and opportunity (Heritage, 2013). Removing one or more of these components will reduce or eliminate the likelihood of a crime occurring. For a crime to occur, all three components must be present. The inclination component is the individual's desire or impulse to commit the crime. Bias is a natural tendency and involves an individual's thought process. The inclination is often motivated by “financial gain, revenge, jealousy, anger, and hatred” (Heritage, 2013, p. 1). The property component is the ability of an individual to commit the crime. During the presence of this component the individual has something to gain by committing the crime. The World Trade Center is an example of the heritage component because the property was destroyed and the organization gained recognition (Heritage, 2013). The opportunity component occurs when the individual has been presented with the perfect opportunity to commit the crime successfully or with a decreased chance of being caught.
