Credibility is "the quality of being trusted and believed" according to the New Oxford American Dictionary. Credibility can be hard to gain but extremely easy to lose. In this article you will see how credibility can literally make or break someone like Sammy Sosa. Sammy Sosa was a former MLB player from San Pedro de Marcoris, Dominican Republic. Sosa was born on November 12, 1968 ("Sammy Sosa Biography"). From an early age it was clear that Sosa had what it took to become a great player. At the age of 15 the Philadelphia Phillies tried to sign him but failed because the league said the player had to be over 16 (“Sammy Sosa”). Since he couldn't play for the Phillies, he decided to play for the local leagues before going to a Toronto Bluejays camp where he was spotted by a Texas Rangers scout who later signed him to a contract ("Sammy Sosa"). A few years later Sammy Sosa was traded to the Chicago Cubs from the Chicago White Sox ("Sammy Sosa"). That's when Sosa really became famous especially with his home run battle with Mark McGwire ("Sammy Sosa"). Sosa had developed into a great slugger with incredible home run numbers every season. During the 1998 season Sosa and McGwire began their home run contest to see who could break Roger Maris' home run record which was set at 61 home runs in a single season ("Sammy Sosa Biography"). It was a heated battle, but Mark McGwire won with 70 home runs while Sosa placed just behind him with 66 home runs ("Sammy Sosa Biography"). These men were both responsible for the return of baseball and its fans after the strike (Schmidt). Finally Sosa was a well known player with many accolades.
