Courage is a necessity to overcome fears and achieve the desired goal. Fear is something that exists in all of us. There is no hero or particularly courageous figure who is devoid of fear. Being fearless is not necessary to be courageous, you simply have to look beyond or overcome your fears to possess this great quality. When you overcome fears and go against the norm, there are always risks. There are different types of risks that occur. Someone could risk life or limb, while others risk their reputation. Both risks are serious enough to require a person to have the courage to bear that particular risk. Courage can manifest itself anytime, anywhere, and often in our daily lives. Everyone will experience courage, no matter how young, old, wise or foolish they are. The effects of courage may not always be positive, but they are definitely remembered. Overcoming fears when the odds are against you is a requirement of courage. If you are afraid to do something but do it anyway, you are brave. Gandhi spoke out courageously in the face of violence. He said, “Nonviolence is the greatest strength available to humanity.” (286); this is a statement that many would find naive, but Gandhi went against the norm, and that in itself is something courageous. Courage is doing what you believe in despite the odds that may be against you, and this is exactly what Gandhi did. Overcoming your fears and standing up for what you believe in is an important aspect of courage. In the story "My People Will Never Believe Me Again," Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins describes a young Indian woman who works for the United States Army as a translator. Throughout the story, Sarah takes orders from the military despite... middle of paper... here, in the cold, in regulation clothing. We know that halfway through the ride the sheriff is waiting to take us back." (361-62) It is clear that this girl is a little foolish in her ways, but still brave. She knows there is no chance of escaping, but she holds on however the pain of running away. Courage is not a simple thing to define with words. More or less the definition of courage is constantly evolving with the actions of courage taken every day risks involved. Do these things and you can be courageous, but these actions are only the foundation of what courage has yet to become. You need to have the courage to be famous or in the spotlight to be courageous it is very important, and the more you use it, the stronger you will be.
