Antisocial Personality Disorder is a personality disorder said to have one in twenty-five people in America, commonly called sociopaths, these people are characterized by a disregard for social norms and a callous indifference to the feelings of others. These people fall into the two extremes of American society, namely scoundrels and failures, or powerful and wealthy individuals, but rarely fall into the “hard working” or middle class section of society. Sociopaths have inherent traits including: being manipulative, callous, dishonesty, hostility, risk taking, impulsiveness, irresponsibility. They have very inflated egos, lie and cheat, simply because they have no remorse, shame or guilt. Their emotions are superficial, their decisions are logical, and with all these factors weighed, their roles in society are generally either the one who can't get a job or keep one, or in high positions of leadership, or other rich jobs. Sociopathy has been considered universal and timeless, but, interestingly, it is more prevalent in some cultures than others. In Taiwan, studies show that the percentage of people with antisocial personality disorder ranges from 0.03% to 0.14%, compared to the United States which has an approximate average of 4% (or one in twenty-five people). The popular belief proposed by Robert Hare is that the United States is actually enabling, aiding, and even valorizing certain traits of sociopathy. Another way this theory has been stated is that blameless manipulation of other people blends with social expectations to a greater extent than in China or other more group-centered societies. But this begs the question: if we have so many... middle of paper... there are few better environments for sociopaths, with false personalities, false emotions, to be admired, to be advertised, Hollywood is perhaps one of them . one of the greatest breeding grounds for sociopaths in America. I believe one of the best examples of sociopathy in Hollywood, even if not officially diagnosed, would be Charlie Sheen, who shows almost all the symptoms: drug use, domestic abuse, repeated deception, feeling superior to everyone, failed relationships, aggravations, problems with the law, Charlie Sheen, although not currently diagnosed as a sociopath, is one of the best examples of sociopaths in America. There is no cure for antisocial personality disorder, it is simply a reality we face in modern American society, and although these people function differently, and sometimes dangerously, in today's society, they have become a powerful and integrated part of American society.
