Introduction In the African countries of Uganda and South Sudan, thousands of men, women and children are brutally murdered. The assassins are often child soldiers led by a military madman named Joseph Kony. They call themselves the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) and are considered one of the world's most vicious terrorist groups. The Beginning of the LRAThe Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) was originally founded in 1986 by Alice Lakwena in northern Uganda. Subsequently, the group was taken over in 1987 by Joseph Kony. Although the group's original purpose was to demand rights for the Acholi people, oppressed and mistreated by the Ugandan government, it has since evolved into one of the most bloodthirsty groups in Africa. According to the US State Department, between 1986 and 2005, the armed group led by Kony moved several times. It first moved from Uganda to South Sudan, then back to Uganda and in 2006, finally moving its operations to the borders of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR) and South Sudan. have left Uganda, it is reported that more than ninety-five percent of the refugees living in the area have managed to recover. Thanks to the support of countries like the United States, they were able to leave refugee camps and begin rebuilding their lives. Due to its atrocities, the LRA has been classified by the US State Department as a terrorist group since 2001. Likewise, the group's leader Joseph Kony has also been listed as a global terrorist by the State Department since 2008. The LRA was officially listed as a terrorist organization by the African Union on 22 November 2011.KonyUnder the...... middle. of paper......The People's Defense Forces (UPDF), together with the governments of South Sudan and the DRC, have begun attacking known LRA camps in South Sudan and along the border with the DRC in what it is known as Operation Lighting Thunder. The operation was successful in weakening the LRA, but nevertheless failed to force Kony and the LRA into peace talks. An attempt is being made to weaken the Lord's Resistance Army by encouraging soldiers to defect from the group and return home. Messages from families, community leaders and former LRA members are broadcast on local radio stations and from helicopters flying over known LRA locations. These messages are produced by US military advisors, the African Union Regional Task Force and other organizations. The initiative has shown signs of success as the number of LRA fighters has fallen from over a thousand in 2008 to around two hundred in 2014.
