This is a more reliable form of narration because it is able to convey direct and indirect thought seamlessly throughout the text. We have an insight into Gabriel's thoughts of which he is often the focus. By having this point of view the reader has the ability to compare the relationship between Gretta and Gabriel from the outside and the inside. The narrative voice and narrative distance contribute to the reader's understanding of their relationship by demonstrating Gabriel's self-centered personality and how he lives so much in his mind that he neglects his wife both emotionally and physically. We don't get direct insight from her into Gretta's feelings in the relationship, but they are made clear through her actions and behavior. She often ignores his volatile mood by laughing at his rude remarks or checking up on him throughout the evening. Her distance and contempt for Gabriel during the taxi ride to the hotel and after her old lover's admission clearly show that he was the only man who ever loved her enough to die for him.
