Psychology in my professionPsychology is involved in almost all fields of work in the modern era. Marketers use psychology to understand how to convey their product to consumers. Car designers use psychology to give their cars characteristics that can convince potential buyers to choose their car. Doctors use psychology to better understand their patients. My chosen profession is education and there are unlimited applications for psychology. In teaching, psychology is the basis through which teachers understand their students. The specific area that would be most relevant to teaching would probably be social psychology. Undergraduate students take essentially the same courses during their 4-year stay at university. But only some students want to regurgitate the knowledge they have acquired over the years. These are the students who have chosen teaching as a profession. Those who want to pass on what they have learned to students must not only be knowledgeable in their subjects, but they must also know how to understand students. If a teacher cannot understand his or her students, then there is very little hope that the teacher will teach the student anything. Understanding a student is a complex process that requires a lot of training. A teacher needs to know what the child is thinking in order to fully understand. Teachers need to be able to communicate with students so that the student can tell the teacher what he or she is thinking. Another way to understand a student is to study social psychology. Social psychology is the study of the effects of people on people. More specifically, social psychology looks at how interactions between people affect an individual. Social psychologists study how people react in groups, emotional behavior, and people's attitudes and opinions. Because there is never a time in school when a child is alone, it is vital that a teacher understands how children act and react when placed in a group or class. A teacher needs to understand why some kids are more extroverted, while others seem to vanish in class. It is the teacher's job to know why a child is not learning to the best of his or her ability. Social psychology examines these problems and searches for solutions that will remedy a child's abnormal behavior in the classroom. A teacher who is fluent in social psychology and understands a child's way of thinking is much better equipped to deal with the everyday problems of teaching.
