Among the many arguments that Gatto makes in his article, one of the ones that stands out the most is that school is created to deteriorate any type of originality in an individual. Gatto claims that not only does school teach children to think that they should "consume without stopping" but "even better" it "encourages them not to think at all" (Gatto154). Gatto believes that school is creating distracted individuals who only think about consuming, so that businesses are the only ones to benefit. Critical thinking once again provides the solution to this accusation. Critical thinking can create more open-minded rather than distracted individuals or students. When students truly reflect on and analyze information, they do more than memorize it, they understand it and discover where they can apply it in their daily lives. Students are expanding their horizons and developing different ways of thinking and seeing the situation rather than always the same fixed positions. A school with open-minded individuals can also create a better atmosphere because students will feel more comfortable expressing new, original ideas without the fear of being mocked or ridiculed.
