Growing up in an interurban school district, service and interaction with the community was always promoted. For me, volunteering has become more than a graduation requirement, it has become a hobby. By accumulating countless hours, I discovered a passion for helping others. Exploring the University of Pennsylvania, it is evident that social service both locally and internationally is a core element of the university. At Penn Engineering in particular, Engineers Without Borders (EWB) have contributed to communities around the world. The first time I heard about the EWB chapter at the University of Pennsylvania was during the summer of 2011. Hearing about the chapter's plan to create an irrigation system in Guatemala caught my attention. Learning about the project and how it would improve the living standards of the people living in the village pushed me to dedicate more time to social service.
