With the terrorist attacks on the United States, many Americans have experienced feelings of fear, sadness, and tremendous anger. Many of Middle Eastern origin have suffered great prejudice and discrimination and are stereotyped as terrorists. These types of feelings are widespread in American society today. Likewise, although not widely discussed, Japanese Americans have felt these sentiments directed toward them for several generations. Going from the extreme of being sent to internment camps after the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, to the more common extreme of being stereotyped in the entertainment industry and on Internet sites, prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping have made part of the lives of many Japanese Americans. The greatest act of prejudice or discrimination since the enslavement of African Americans was probably the internment of the Japanese during World War II. After the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, there was great fear that Japanese Americans on the West Coast would rebel and aid the Japanese war effort (“Japanese American Internment”). However, much evidence indicated otherwise. The Munson Report investigated the loyalty of Japanese Americans and their likelihood of rebelling and found overwhelmingly that they were loyal. The report also describes Japanese Americans as having “considerably weakened […] loyalty to Japan” and are now considered “foreigners in Japan” (Munson report). The report even went so far as to state that “there will be no armed revolt by the Japanese. There is no Japanese 'problem' on the coast” (Munson Report).
