Topic > Gender Role in Moso Matrilineal Society - 806

The Moso matrilineal society, located in Lugu Lake in southern China, is often called the daughter's paradise. This is because the society traces the basis of its ancestry to the female line, unlike most Chinese societies that practice patrilineal. The inheritance of property also passes from mother to daughter. Many people believe that Moso matrilineal society is simply a mirror image of patrilineal society, which leads to the false impression that Moso women have a higher social status in their society. However, it is the man who actually has a higher social status. Men in Moso society have a higher level of education, can choose their lovers from a wider range than women, and are the leaders of Moso society. This essay will analyze the real situation of Moso society which is different from what most people see and explain why Moso men have a higher social status than women. The matrilineal is not the exact mirror image of the patrilineal. As discussed by Professor Ma (2014), this is because both patrilineal and matrilineal lines depend on women to give birth and there are biological differences between men and women. This fact is important as it will determine the role of each gender in society. In patrilineal society, people already realize the importance of women to give birth to a child, which is emphasized more in matrilineal society. It makes women have a vital role in matrilineal society. Despite the significant role of women in matrilineal society, it has a disadvantage; women do many more jobs than men. In matrilineal society, like Moso society, women work harder in every single aspect of their lives. Women usually stay at home to help other women do some housework.
