David Copperfield by Charles Dickens David Copperfield by Charles Dickens is a touching story that takes place in 1800s England and is about a young boy named David Copperfield. Who goes through many difficulties growing up.. This story teaches the importance of love and how strongly necessary it is. David was born on a Friday at midnight. His father's aunt, Miss Betsy, was present at his birth and when she found out he was a boy she left and never returned. David lives with his widowed mother and Nurse Peggotty, who love him dearly. He had sweet memories with his mother, like playing, singing songs and hugging, she also taught him studies. When David was eight years old, his mother began courting a tall, dark, cold man, Mr. Murdstone. Two months later Peggotty took David on a trip to visit her brother, Mr Peggotty, in Yarmouth. There he also met Mr. Peggotty's adopted children, Ham, a huge, strong boy, and Emily, who was David's age. He spent most of his time playing with Emily and they quickly became good friends. Time flew by and David and Peggotty were already on their way home. When they arrived he discovered that Mr Murdstone and his mother had married! He was very upset because he didn't like Mr Murdstone and things would never go back to the way they were. Mr Murdstone was not at all a pleasant person, in fact he forbade any outburst of emotion between Davy and his mother. She couldn't hug him with joy like before. Mr. Murdstone's sister, Miss Jane, came to live with them, she too was a morbid soul. When Davy went to school with his mother, Mr. Murdstone and Miss Jane were always there to watch them. This made him very nervous when he stumbled and slurred his words. Mr Murdstone thought it was due to disobedience and that he needed more discipline. Then, he took Davy to his room and beat him so badly that David bit him. He was later sent to a school in London without saying goodbye to his mother. As punishment he was sent on holiday because there was no one there.
