To be "queen" Alice must reach the eighth square, meeting several residents along the way. When Alice meets Panco Panco and Panco Panco, halfway through her journey, she sees them with wonder. “They remained so still that she completely forgot they were alive,” (Carroll). This shows that Alice is still learning and can sometimes make mistakes. He continues to travel and slowly matures as he does so. By the time she reaches the seventh square, where the Red Knight attempts to take her prisoner, she is able to understand much more at once. When Alice first crawled through the looking glass, she was a child, but at this point she is better able to empathize with those around her. This is demonstrated in her response to the Red Knight: “Just as he reached her, the horse suddenly stopped: 'You are my prisoner! - shouted the knight, falling from his horse. Surprised as she was, Alice was more afraid for him than for herself at the moment, and watched him with some anxiety as he mounted again” (Carroll). She places the Knights in front of her and is able to see him, even though the Red Knight claims he wants to take her prisoner; it's not actually a threat. He bases this on his previous interactions with the characters and the backwards path
