In the last hundred years man has visited the moon and seen robots perform surgeries, and at the basis of every new achievement is technology. With update after update, bigger and better computers keep coming. However, this big new world is one where people would rather stare at a screen than go out or have a meaningful conversation with a friend or family member. Overuse of technology leads to difficulties understanding social cues, introverted behavior, and further segregated generations, although it is never too late to reverse the effects. One effect of technology on society is the silence that surrounds people in public places. One Easter weekend, Studs Terkel boarded a train at the Atlanta airport when a young couple got on late. An announcement promptly informed passengers that the train would be delayed by less than a minute. Instead of confronting the two, the commuters glared at them. “George Orwell, your time has come and gone!” - shouted Terkel, gazes turned to him (Terkel, Coming of Age). Awkward silence is becoming an increasingly common problem, especially when surrounded by complete strangers. Nowadays, silence is encouraged when the time comes for people to express their opinions, and those who do so are seen as annoying. Few students actually speak up, most sit at their desks and wait for the lesson to end so they can do their work and finish it as soon as possible, it makes you wonder if they are actually learning anything (Black, Coming of Age). Children born in the late 20th and 21st centuries are becoming silent, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to pull them out of alternate realities in which they are in control.
