Ocean acidification and climate change ( 600-700)The only reason for the change in atmospheric temperature can be attributed to carbon dioxide emissions. Ocean acidification occurred due to chemical changes in the oceans. Highly concentrated carbonic acid is the product that forms due to CO2 entering the oceans and reacting with water. Oceans on Acidification Scott Doney, in 2007, argued that ocean life was facing an almost unprecedented environmental challenge. He said marine life has endured large climate changes and acidification discrepancies in the past, but projected rates of climate change and ocean acidification over the next century are much faster than those the planet has previously experienced. The ocean has always absorbed CO2 from the air. An article presented in Nature in August 2012 highlights that about half of all human-generated CO2 is absorbed by the ocean. This chemical reaction occurs naturally and as the rate at which carbon is absorbed, the concentration of carbonic acid increases. This is of enormous concern, particularly for shelled creatures. Animals such as corals, crabs and fish need calcium carbonate to build their shells. Calcium carbonate is dissolved by carbonic acid and as a result these animals are unable to maintain the calcium shell. Biosciences in 2010 suggested that carbon sequestration by oceans and land is decreasing, which has the potential to further worsen the impact of carbon emissions. Mutilation of the ecosystem In the absence of calcium carbonate, corals and molluscs cannot survive. The ocean ecosystem depends on these organisms because they provide a great source of food at the base of the food chain. They must be abundant in order for... half the size of paper... the size that affects the daily lives of most human beings. Commercial fishing contributes to the world economy and feeds millions of people. The creatures they feed not only provide stability for species like sharks, whales and dolphins, but also provide commercial food fish that maintain sustainable populations. Not all fish caught are used as food for humans. Popular supplements like Omega-3 are derived from commercially caught fish. In addition to this, everyday products such as fertilizers, cosmetic ingredients, vitamins, jellies and even pigments can be prepared from commercially caught fish products. If it remains persistent, ocean acidity will ruin marine ecosystems. Preserving sustainable fisheries will become unmanageable if carbon dioxide absorbed by the world's oceans is not significantly reduced.
