People during the Renaissance did not recognize scientific value in his notebook drawings because the study of the human body only included structure, not function (O'Malley 17-18); while the function of the body is extremely valuable to modern specialists. Leonardo also favored science over art, he included illustrations in his notes for better understanding, “'[w]ith what words, O writer, can you describe with perfection the whole arrangement of that of which here is the drawing?... the more detail you write about it, the more you will confuse the mind of the listener'” (Belt 6 e), all the drawings in Leonardo's diary were actually intended to be an aid to his scientific work.
