Hip hop is the most controversial music genre today. There are a lot of people who think the genre is just rappers reciting lyrics about sex and drugs. While there are indeed many songs that deal with these topics, most hip hop songs are about real-life events. Hip hop is a genre that is greatly influenced by the environment in which the rapper/songwriter lives. Of all the music genres, hip hop is the best at stating something without sugarcoating it. This is what makes hip hop so interesting to listen to, but unfortunately it's also what turns many people away from it. Much of the language used in hip hop can easily be considered vulgar, which some people don't like. However, there is a larger and more important message behind much hip hop music. Artists like KRS-1, NWA, and Public Enemy began creating music that spoke to these events from a black person's perspective. There was definitely a lot of content to draw inspiration from and that's what a lot of artists did. NWA's Express Yourself music video is one of my favorite examples. The lyrics talk about how difficult it is for black people to express themselves, but they should do it anyway. At the same time, the video shows some of the hardships that African Americans faced, such as slavery and police brutality. These strong lyrics and video clips definitely send a message to listeners and viewers. But to take it a step further, the song has a very catchy beat that is fun to listen to, making people want to listen to the song and watch the music video. NWA knew what they were doing when creating this song/music video. They wanted people to hear about their struggles through their music, and it worked. NWA and other rappers who used these same tactics became well known and popular among anti-racism advocates
