The beginning of the book The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis was difficult to understand and understand, but as you continue reading, you find that this book is about heaven and hell and the people in it they go. The narrator who is the main character of the book tells the story based on what he sees from his eyes. The author describes hell as a dark, cold city with alleys where people live and no one to be seen on the streets, and heaven as this place that looks beautiful with green grass, mountains, rivers, and animals running around . C.S. Lewis uses several characters throughout the book to help understand the scene and situations that are occurring. The ghosts that accompany him to heaven from hell are all different and play an important role in this novel. The other characters in the novel are spirits who live in heaven and talk to ghosts. Through the conversations between the ghosts and spirits you learn more and more about what is going on, how the characters got there and their problems. The narrator listens to the two talk and learns more about himself from the conversation. I believe Lewis crafted this book so that the reader can put themselves in the position of the narrator and also think about their own life and circumstances. At first the ghost on the bus and in hell seemed to the narrator to be solid, but he soon came to find that once he reached heaven he could see through them. He thought it was the new environment they were in that made them seem translucent. Each ghost has a different problem that either ends up being solved and they turn towards the mountain, or they don't listen and go back to the bus. In most cases in this book the ghosts return to the bus, which will take them back to hell. The ghosts don't like the way heaven is made and feel uncomfortable. They feel uncomfortable because the grass is hard and tough on your feet, the river is solid, the flowers and trees are solid as a diamond and can't move, and even the leaves are too heavy to lift. Most of them don't understand why they are there. Heaven is a big change from hell and the ghost isn't feeling well right now so they want to go back to where they felt at home and comfortable no matter if it was hell.
