These life lessons include never taking life for granted, a person should always strive to succeed, having a positive attitude leads others to be happy, and staying close to the people you love in difficult times. These lessons helped a young adult, Johnny, live his short life as best he could. The first important point is that a person should never take life for granted. The book Death Be Not Proud is about a boy and his fight against a brain tumor. Although Johnny, the boy, was a very mature seventeen year old, it is still very tragic that he did not get to live as long as most people. Many people in our society don't stop to think about the little things in life until something serious happens. Johnny lived his life to the fullest before and after finding out about his illness. He had great aspirations for his life. He wanted to do many things in his life. He wanted to be a chemist, mathematician, physicist, poet and cook. Johnny didn't stop doing his homework or doing chemistry experiments unless it was absolutely necessary; he liked doing both. Johnny's illness was very unexpected. His parents never imagined he would get so sick, and they couldn't understand why it should be his brain. A lot of people thought that was the best part of Johnny. In today's society many people get sick and families don't understand why. Throughout the book, Johnny's father tries to figure out why Johnny was the one who got sick and why it was his brain instead of his arm, for example. Johnny never gave up on his life or the fact that he would survive the disease. The second important point is that a person should never lose hope. Throughout his battle with his brain tumor, Johnny was continually confident and optimistic that he would win. Although many different complications arose over the fifteen months of battle, he only showed fear and uncertainty a handful of times. This is a brave and courageous feat for someone so young to accomplish.
