Freud had many followers who used the concept of psychoanalysis to make their mark on the practice of psychology. The definition of psychoanalysis can be defined as the discovery of the roles and importance of the unconscious mind (feelings, thoughts and impulses that cannot be easily accessed in the conscious mind) and how it determines behaviors and illnesses. Psychology mainly branches into the conscious part of the mind. Sigmund Freud was the first to develop the very idea of looking inside oneself and finding patterns that lead to a bigger picture. Ahead of his time, many found his studies ridiculous and believed the very idea of someone having mental and physical problems that originated in the human psyche was unrealistic. Freud did not listen and continued to study this phenomenon in his patients and made important contributions in a variety of disciplines. Indeed, this was probably the first place where Freud got the idea that religion was actually a neurosis of the mind. Many of his patients demonstrated that the mind was a powerful tool and created neuroses related to religion and it is not difficult to see that their rituals from the outside would look similar to religious ones.
