Before the colonization period, tribes depended on their land and agriculture was their primary method of survival. Before 1900, most Indians were poor farmers (due to lack of land) or unskilled workers, which led to higher poverty rates during this period. Now, there have been economic developments that 1) have moved the Native American population away from the unprofitable farming profession, succeeding in reducing unemployment, and 2) helping them maintain a “modern” skill set that provides a regular income. Currently, there have been many gaming enterprises that have helped improve the local economies of indigenous peoples. These businesses provided Native Americans with a regular income, which helped their reservations receive higher levels of education, economic development, etc. Thanks to these recent developments in gaming businesses, unemployment has been reduced for some of the indigenous population and their reserves have seen some progress. As mentioned above, these new skills moved indigenous peoples away from unprofitable agricultural endeavors and from unemployment and economic depression; instead leading them to a higher rate of employment and economic stability
