Reverend Hale's presence in the third act is resigned, he is sure that he and the court are wrong and he just wants to correct the mistakes he has made and prevent more mistakes from being made. Hale's acquiescence is shown first by a caption in which he is reluctant to answer Lieutenant Governor Danforth's question and then shown again by the quote “Your Honor. I cannot think that we can judge this man on the basis of such evidence” which demonstrates his disbelief and disagreement with the court's decisions. Reverend Hale expresses his disagreement with the court's actions by saying, “Is every defense an act upon the court? No one can” And he is immediately shot down and silenced. He then reiterates his fears by talking about the country's fear of the courts, and saying: "But it does not follow that all the accused are part of it." Mr. Hale repeatedly tries to appeal to Danforth and the court, an example of this is the quote “This morning I signed Rebecca Nurse's soul, Your Honor, I will not hide it, my hand still trembles as from a wound! Please, sir, let the lawyers present this matter to you. Hale is defeated for a while but is brought back into the picture saying, “Your Excellency, it is a natural lie to tell; Please stop now before another one is convicted!
