Working well with others is an invaluable tool in a leader's tool bag. Just as diverse personalities are an asset to a mission, they can also present challenges for a leader. A good leader will invariably have a myriad of personalities to deal with and will very often have to manage difficult personalities. Respect helps make these situations work. Every member wants to know that their contribution is valuable, and every member wants to feel respected. This becomes difficult when a diverse team of conflicting personalities work together. Effective leadership requires the ability to bring these personalities into a cooperative team. Leading by example is helpful. When team members see their leader treat every single member, even the difficult ones, with equal respect, the team tends to emulate that behavior. If personalities conflict, a leader must turn to one-on-one mentoring to identify appropriate conduct.
