Content Area EducationEnglish language learners in the United States face multiple challenges in achieving academic success. To successfully complete an activity, they must master both English as a language form and how it is used in core content classes. As a result, teachers must implement different instructional approaches and methods across content areas to help ELL students. Among these methods are content-enriched English as a Second Language (ESL) teaching, Cognitive Academic Language Approach (CALLA), and sheltered content teaching. Content-based or content-enriched teaching of English as a second language is an approach that provides second language learners with content and language instruction. In this approach, students are exposed to a significant amount of English through motivating content. Students are taught useful language that is embedded in relevant context rather than as isolated language. This approach seeks to prepare students to acquire the language using the context of any subject, so that students learn the language by using it in a specific context rather than learning it in isolation. This approach is used for children and adults in school settings or in classrooms for students learning English for specific purposes. The Cognitive Academic Language Approach (CALLA) is an approach that integrates academic language development, content area instruction, and “explicit instruction in learning strategies that can help students remember both content and the language." (Chamot and O'Malley, 1996, p.263). This model promotes thinking during the language lesson because students need to be critical and active thinkers in their learning. CALLA is designed for limited English...... half of the paper ......each is used in all content areas and students work in cooperative, linguistically diverse groups to promote development of language and content learning. This model focuses on content learning, but the use of scaffolding techniques helps promote language acquisition because students are exposed to the L2 in meaningful contexts. I think implementing all these approaches is possible in my classroom because most of my students are language learners. They therefore need all the support to acquire the English language through learning the contents. If students are motivated and committed to their learning, they can acquire the L2.
