The three perspectives can be compared and contrasted using organizational structure which is social and physical structure. Social structure is defined as connection and interaction between employees of each department of an organization, while physical structure is the actual structure of the organization (lecture slides, week 4, 2014, structure, culture and design). The concept of social structure is developed by Max Webber for the purpose of examining the division of labor, hierarchy of authority, and business rules and procedures (Hatch and Cunliffe, 2009, p.103). Therefore, from a modernist perspective, it is clear that the structure is differentiated through characteristics such as a flat or tall organizational structure. Tall organizational structures are those with division of labor across many vertical hierarchical levels from top to bottom with only a few departments.
